Summer of 2013 saw box office franchise hits like Iron Man 3, Star Trek Into Darkness, Despicable Me 2 and Fast & Furious 6, which drew audiences to theaters in waves; especially fans of the franchises these sequels belong to. Somewhere in the middle came Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim; a monster-vs.-robots sci-fi blockbuster that has already received a sort of cult following.
Pacific Rim performed subpar in the domestic box office (only bringing in $101.8 million), but was thankfully saved by foreign markets, leading to a total of $411 million worldwide. As most will realize, as long as a movie succesfully profits financially, there’s always the possibility of a sequel.
In previous months it has been mentioned that del Toro has been working on bringing us a sequel to the Jaeger vs. Kaiju fest, and now Universal Pictures has officially announced that Pacific Rim 2 will arrive in 3D and IMAX theaters on April 7th, 2017.
In a statement for Buzzfeed, del Toro has announced that the movie’s stars Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi will definitely return for the sequel, as well as teasing the excitement of the plot:
“The characters I love will return. Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.”
What do you think about this announcement? Do you think del Toro will stay on to direct the sequel?
