Frank Grillo Talks Returning As Crossbones in ‘Captain America 3’!

In the midst of Marvel Studios’ “Phase Two” of its ever-expanding Cinematic Universe (MCU), Captain America: The Winter Soldier took the world by storm back in April.  It provided a perfect, thoughtful set-up for next Summer’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, while in many ways setting up its own side-universe for future Captain America solo adventures.

The Winter Soldier never wasted a minute, using both existing and new characters without feeling like too much was being thrown into the mix.  One of the characters was Brock Rumlow, played by Frank Grillo.  In the comics, Rumlow becomes villain Crossbones, with a pretty recognizable mask and costume.  While we didn’t see Grillo dawn the Crossbones mask in The Winter Soldier, we do know that (MINOR SPOILERS) Rumlow will most likely make an appearance in the next Cap film.

Like most of Marvel Studios’ hired actors, Rumlow did sign a multi-film contract, so any character left alive is bound to have some use in a future project.  Captain America 3 is currently slated for a May 2016 release, which is likely when we’d see Rumlow next.

Grillo recently spoke with Collider about his return to the character, saying that he’s “optimistic” we will see him in the next Cap movie.  Here’s what he had to say:

“Very early on the Russos said, ‘Look, this is an origin film for this character. We’re gonna discover who this is and this is a big movie with a lot of moving parts, but we’re gonna discover you in this film and, you know, here’s the information about who Brock Rumlow turns into and blah, blah, blah.’ And so we’ve had multiple discussions about what comes after that, that thing. So, you know, it’s obvious Rumlow is covered in rubble and burned to crisp at the end, but you see he’s still there. They don’t do that for no reason.”

Are you excited to see Frank Grillo return in the next Captain America movie?

Captain America 3 hits theaters on May 6th, 2016, directed by Anthony & Joe Russo.
