‘Bourne 5’ Rumor: Pushed Back to 2016 So Matt Damon Can Return?

This week it was announced that Universal Pictures’ upcoming fifth Bourne movie, tentatively known as Bourne 5, will be pushed back to July 2016.  It was originally set to hit theaters in August 2015.

Jeremy Renner has been set to reprise his role as Aaron Cross from the most recent installment The Bourne Legacy, which is quite possibly why Bourne 5 was moved back almost an entire year.  For those unaware, Renner has lot on his plate right now.  He is currently filming Avengers: Age of Ultron this Summer, and will move on to film Mission: Impossible 5 later this year.  On top of that, he will at some point in 2015 be busy shooting the recently-announced Hansel & Gretel 2, which he’s set to star in.

Film The Bourne Ultimatum

Ever since 2012’s Bourne Legacy, fans of the franchise have been itching to see Renner team up with Jason Bourne himself, actor Matt Damon, in a future movie.  Damon has been uncertain about his return to the series over recent years, recently noting that he’s holding out for Paul Greengrass- who directed Damon in Bourne Supremacy & Ultimatum– to return as well.

However, we now learn from Latino Review that the real reason for the delay of Bourne 5, according to their most reliable source, may also be due to the fact that Damon will indeed return to star alongside Renner in the new movie.

While it makes a bit of sense that Damon would seek a return to the franchise after a few movies with mediocre box office success, the only odd tidbit is that Justin Lin is set to direct Bourne 5, immediately ignoring the fact that Greengrass is the only thing keeping Damon back from reprising his role.

Nothing is confirmed yet, and should probably be taking this with a grain of salt.  However, you can’t deny seeing Renner & Damon teaming up on the big screen would be epic.  What do you think?

Bourne 5 is set to hit theaters on July 15th, 2016.
