Ever since we were revealed the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII, it seems just about every day now the long-lived sci-fi saga is getting a lot of attention in the news. From casting additions, to leaked set photos, and even announcements about the planned spinoff films; Star Wars is on every fanboy’s mind right now.
A couple weeks back it was revealed that Godzilla director Gareth Edwards will be brought on to direct one of the three initial spinoff films. Although it is unclear which movie he will direct, speculation has lead to the possibility of fan-favorite characters Boba Fett, Yoda or Han Solo getting their own standalone movies. His effort with the franchise will hit theaters in December 2016.
Today, Disney & Lucasfilm announced that yet another director will be introduced to the Star Wars universe. Josh Trank, director of Chronicle and the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, will officially direct another one of the spinoff films. No release date has been confirmed at this time; however if the current vision of Disney goes as planned, we could see Trank’s film arrive in 2018 (in between Episdoe VIII & IX).
Here’s what Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy had to say about Trank:
“He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX.”
While her kind words towards Trank define the statement, take note that she mentions these spinoff films will reach “beyond” the core characters of the main 9 movies. Could this mean the scarce-but-beloved Boba Fett will indeed be one of the characters to get his own movie? Only time will tell.
Trank mentions his enthusiasm (as anyone would) towards joint Star Wars, stating:
“The magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood. The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time.”
Trank’s work on Chronicle proves that he has the ability to create an original origin story and keep people wondering what will happen next. His direction with the reboot of Marvel franchise Fantastic Four, due next Summer, will be his next chance to showcase his talents behind the camera.
What do you think? Will Josh Trank make a good addition to the ever-growing Star Wars franchise?
Star Wars: Episode VII hits theaters on December 18th, 2015, directed by J.J. Abrams, and Gareth Edwards’ untitled spinoff film is due December 16th, 2016. Josh Trank’s The Fantastic Four hits theaters on June 19th, 2015, with a sequel due July 14th, 2017.
