Huge casting news comes this morning for the Star Wars universe. Lucasfilm has officially confirmed that actresses Lupita Nyong’o and Gwendoline Christie have joined the cast of J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII!
Nyong’o won the Oscar this year for Best Supporting Actor for her role in 12 Years a Slave, and has been rumored to be in talks to join Episode VII for some time now.
Christie currently plays Brienne in the hit HBO series Game of Thrones, and also recently joined the cast of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, set for release in November 2015 (a month before Episode VII hits theaters).
This is certainly a big announcement for both actresses; Nyong’o finding her first big role since her Oscar win, and Christie now taking part in two big-budget franchises, as well as the massively-popular Thrones.
It was not specified which characters the two will be playing, though we can expect more bits of news in the coming weeks.
WARNING: Possible Spoilers for EPISODE VII
In other Star Wars news, TMZ has released a gallery of 45 set photos from the set in Abu Dhabi, featuring a very worn Tatooine location and a giant practical alien creature.
Star Wars: Episode VII hits theaters December 18th, 2015, directed by J.J. Abrams, and starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Adam Driver, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, John Boyega, Domhnall Gleeson, Daisy Ridley, and Max von Sydow.
