With just a couple months to go until Marvel Studios’ first cosmic adventure Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters, the question that has been on the minds of fans (since 2012) is when will we see the purple-skinned villain Thanos; last seen in the post-credits of The Avengers). And, more importantly; who will play the Mad Titan when he gets his first speaking role?
Variety now confirms that Marvel has tapped veteran actor Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men, True Grit) to take on the role of Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy this Summer. Not only that, but Brolin is also expected to play the villain in next years’ Avengers: Age of Ultron, and inevitably the third Avengers installment.
It wouldn’t be much of a surprise if we learn Marvel has signed Brolin for more than one outing, as they do with most of their actors. Even TheWrap reports that we should expect to see Brolin in future MCU movies. Fans have speculated that since Age of Ultron will feature the title character as the main villain, Thanos will probably be teased just the right amount, leading up to him being the big “be-all end-all” baddie in Avengers 3.
The news of an actor with Brolin’s caliber being cast in such an essential role must give fans a sigh of relief, after what seemed to be a pretty disappointing week for Marvel Studios news. Last weekend it was reported that Edgar Wright is leaving the director’s chair of the upcoming Ant-Man. A few days later it was announced that Drew Goddard would no longer be the show runner for the upcoming Daredevil Netflix series.
What do you think of Marvel casting Josh Brolin as Thanos?
Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters on August 1st, and Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters May 1st, 2015.
