In a very surprising move this afternoon, Variety reports that director Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) will be leaving the upcoming Marvel Studios film Ant-Man.
Wright has been attached to the project for quite some time now; in fact since 2006, way back before Iron Man was even released. Which naturally makes it such a surprising turn of events with the film set to hit theaters next Summer, considering the dedication and vision he brought to the character.
Apparently Wright is leaving the project due to “differences in vision” with Marvel. The director and studio released a joint statement today, which can be read below:
“Marvel and Edgar Wright jointly announced today that the studio and director have parted ways on ANT-MAN due to differences in their vision of the film. The decision to move on is amicable and does not impact the release date on July 17, 2015. A new director will be announced shortly.”
While we eagerly await the replacement Marvel has in mind, at least we know that the film will not be delayed any longer, and will stick with its July 2015 date.
Who do you think should fill Wright’s shoes and direct Ant-Man? What do you think of Wright and Marvel going their separate ways?
