Earlier this month, Disney CEO Bob Iger stated that the current plan for Disney & Lucasfilm was to create at least three Star Wars spinoff films, and that each would likely be released between each installment in the upcoming trilogy.
Fans have speculated that the spinoff films could follow fan-favorite characters such as Boba Fett, Yoda and Han Solo. However, any and all info has been kept under wraps as tightly as details of Episode VII.
Now, THR reports that Godzilla director Gareth Edwards has officially been brought on to direct the first of the spinoffs, which Disney and Lucasfilm have revealed currently has a December 16th, 2016 release date.
Here’s what Edwards had to say about landing the job:
“Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life – join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm.”
Despite mixed (though mostly positive) reviews for Godzilla, the choice for Edwards to direct makes a solid amount of sense. His outing with the King of Monsters proved he has a great sense of scale behind the camera, as well as maintaining a level of suspense.
But maybe most importantly, Edwards payed solid homage to a long-lived character, which is all anyone could hope will happen when it comes to any of the beloved Star Wars characters. My personal guess is that the first spinoff will indeed center around Boba Fett, focusing on different Bounty Hunters, and the grittier/scumbag side of the galaxy.
What do you think? Is Edwards a good choice to direct a Star Wars movie?
