Ever since Marvel’s The Avengers in 2012, the question on everyone’s mind is when will we see the next Hulk solo film? Surprising fan favorite Mark Ruffalo took the reigns as Dr. Bruce Banner in the Avengers flick, a role previously filled by Eric Bana and Edward Norton. Ruffalo has signed a multi-picture contract with Marvel Studios (not uncommon with most actors Marvel eyes), and has since only appeared in The Avengers, as well as the post-credits scene in Iron Man 3. Next Summer is when we will see Ruffalo next, in Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.
But what happens after the Avengers sequel for the Hulk? Specific plot details are scarce regarding the movie, though we know most of the characters that will be making appearances. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has gone on record saying that the Hulk will have a big role in Age of Ultron, so perhaps by the end of the film we’ll get some insight into what happens next for the character.
Now, it seems that we may have a bit of unofficial insight teasing the possibility of another Hulk solo outing after Age of Ultron has come and gone. Actor Lou Ferrigno, most famous for originally portraying The Hulk in the TV Series back in the 70’s and currently the voice of the Hulk in the modern films, seems to think there will be a sequel to 2008’s The Incredible Hulk.
“Now because he saved the day they’re making another solo ‘Hulk’ movie after the second ‘Avengers’ comes out.”
A few months ago, Ferrigno made a similar statement, which sparked a lot of excitement about a possible sequel. However, nothing was ever officially announced. As for Marvel’s movie schedule after Avengers: Age of Ultron, they currently have set dates for Ant-Man in July 2015, Captain America 3 in May 2016, as well as projects in 2017. This would all most likely lead to Avengers 3 in 2018.
Could Marvel save room for a Hulk feature in Phase 3? Maybe. Will they? It depends. Kevin Feige has stated that he would like a solid blend of both new and old franchises carrying Marvel Studios. So for Phase 3, Ant-Man and Cap 3 would probably end up being followed by the previously-hinted Doctor Strange film later in 2016, as well as Thor 3 and maybe even a Guardians of the Galaxy sequel in 2017.
Many have guessed that a comic book story arc the next Hulk movie could follow may be Planet Hulk or World War Hulk. Unfortunately, these story arcs would require a huge budget, relying on 2+ hours of Hulk and other alien creatures.
If anything, it seems like the best bet for another Hulk solo adventure would take place in Phase 4, after Avengers 3. Can we know for sure? Not until Marvel makes an official announcement for their official timeline of films for Phase 3. Expect that at San Diego Comic Con this July.
What do you think should and could happen with the Hulk?
Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters on May 1st, 2015, directed by Joss Whedon.
