The upcoming reboot of the Fantastic Four has been a questionable, yet interesting endeavor from the start. The reboot was first announced by FOX back in 2009, to pick up the pieces of 2005’s Fantastic Four and 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, which both proved horribly disappointing both critically and commercially. After a few years of on-again off-again planning, it was announced in 2012 that Josh Trank (Chronicle) would helm the film. However, the project went back into the dark for a while, leading some to question whether or not the movie would actually happen.
Now, over the past couple months, we have learned about the Fantastic Four reboot than in the past five years collectively. Josh Trank is indeed still at the directors chair, and we will see the movie hit theaters on June 19th, 2015. But that’s not all; it was also revealed that a younger cast would portray the characters of Marvel’s first family this time around, including Miles Teller as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Kate Mara as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm/The Thing. On top of all that, it was also proudly announced by FOX that a sequel to the film would be released on July 14th, 2017.
The decision to cast younger and to tell an origin story heavily influenced by the Ultimate Fantastic Four comic arc struck many fans the wrong way. The internet community was in an uproar over the fact that we wouldn’t see Mister Fantastic with silver streaks of hair, and that Johnny Storm will be played by an African American actor, differing the story of how him and his sister (Sue Storm) are blood-siblings. But there’s a point where you just have to forget what everybody thinks they know about a movie that hasn’t even been made yet, and stick to your gut feeling. Once you think about it, it’s not that bad of an idea, and could make for a great action/adventure film. Not to mention the cast of actors for the FF team are at the top of the young acting game right now.
Now, the Fantastic Four reboot seems to have found another cast member, playing a character who will play a vital role to the story. Variety reports that the role of legendary villain Victor von Doom, better known as Doctor Doom, may end up being taken by British actor Toby Kebbell. Yet another younger actor, Kebbell, 31, has yet to find a big breakout role, though he has appeared in a number of films over the past decade. These films include Rise of the Planet of the Apes and its upcoming sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, RocknRolla, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, and Wrath of the Titans.
Kebbell was on a shortlist of other British actors for the role, but it appears that FOX may be focusing in on him for the part. The other actors who made the list were Sam Riley, Eddie Redmayne, and Domhnall Gleeson.
