Marvel Studios is on top of the cinematic world right now, releasing multiple films per year that all coincide with each other in the same fictional universe. What started off with Iron Man, Hulk, Thor and Captain America accumulated into Marvel’s The Avengers in 2012, which grossed a worldwide $1.5 billion. Together, the six films between 2008 and 2012 formed what is known as “Phase One”, basically Part One of Marvel’s plans to continue this cinematic universe through at least 2021, as previously mentioned by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.
After Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World in 2013, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, Marvel will release the massively-anticipated Avengers sequel on May 1st, 2015, called Avengers: Age of Ultron.
With just 13 months until the release of Avengers 2, production has begun, and filming has started in both Johannesburg and in Italy. Earlier in the week, the first wave of set photos were revealed online, featuring characters both new and familiar. It seems that Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye character is getting a lot of love on set so far, alongside new-comers of the series Scarlet Witch (played by Elizabeth Olsen) and her brother Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Photos can be seen below:
So far, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, aka the Maximoff twins, look pretty great when they’re in the same shot. And mind you this is without any extra CGI to be added to give both of them their on-screen powers. It’s nice to see Hawkeye back in action after nearly three years of downtime.
Also spotted on set was a photo of an updated Iron Man suit (or a set costume, anyway), as well as the set costume for the films’ title villain, Ultron (mind you again, this is just what the crew is filming with on set, and will be near-completely altered with motion capture and CGI afterwards):
Avengers: Age of Ultron has been confirmed by Joss Whedon to be a film with global scale, hence the filming in Italy, South Africa, and plans to shoot in Korea afterwards, as well as America.
Are you excited from these new set photos? As always, check back to Reel Freak for any and all info on the Avengers sequel.
Avengers: Age of Ultron will hit theaters May 1st, 2015, directed by Joss Whedon, and starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and James Spader.
