It’s okay to admit that after the cinematic grievance called The Legend of Hercules back in January, you may be a little worn out of the title character’s story. It seems that a lot of historical hero figures centered around Greek mythology have been revived on the big screen over the past five years, though many of theses attempts have fallen flat. You have your Clash of the Titans, your Percy Jacksons, and your Immortals. All of which indeed fell a bit flat both financially and critically. And although 300 and its sequel are arguably the best franchise carrying this theme, most of the others are just fun, action-filled trips to the movies.
So when movie-goers heard that 2014 would bring them two live-action films based on the character Hercules, a lot of people probably rolled their eyes. One of them (the previously mentioned) was released in January, utterly failing to make money in the box office, as well as being deemed one of the biggest flops of the year so far. The other, we were told was set to star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and would be released during the Summer. Not much was known plot-wise, and we hadn’t received any footage, but at that point anything sounded better with some star-power involved.
Today, The Rock revealed the first trailer for his take on Hercules via his personal Twitter and Facebook accounts, and I have to admit, it looks pretty badass. What I expected to be swordplay and soldiers turned out to be Hercules fighting one-on-one with several animalistic creatures in a more explosive, raw manner. From the trailer I got a sense of a mixture of 10,000 B.C. and Clash of the Titans, with the action-star feel of Arnold as Conan the Barbarian. It can be seen below:
Whether the story ends up having good writing and dialogue or not, odds are this will be one hell of a time at the theater, and feels like a fun Summer flick.
What do you think of the first trailer for The Rock’s Hercules? See it in theaters July 25th.
