Marvel Studios is currently on a roll, with a general outline of its films planned through 2021, and a vast fan base that keeps on growing with every movie. Warner Bros. and DC has attempted to follow Marvel’s footsteps in creating their own cinematic universe; the first step being 2013’s Man of Steel.
However, things haven’t necessarily been going DC’s way so far, with their upcoming sequel Batman vs. Superman being pushed back from a 2015 release to 2016. May 6th, 2016, to be exact. Why does the date itself matter so much right now? Because this date that Warner Bros. chose to bump the Man of Steel sequel to has already been claimed…..by a Marvel Studios project.
Marvel claimed the May 6th, 2016 date a while back, though the project set for release has been untitled until now. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that this mystery title from Marvel Studios will be Captain America 3. Earlier this week, Anthony & Joe Russo, directors of Captain America: The Winter Soldier will return to direct the third Cap film, and are currently working on the story. Now it seems that another piece of the Phase 3 puzzle has been put together, the first film after 2015’s Ant-Man.
So what does this mean for May 6th, 2016? Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige stood his (and Marvel’s) ground earlier this week, saying that Marvel has no plans to stray from the date, despite the peculiar Batman vs. Superman invasion. Odds are Marvel will conjure up their planned film on time as always, and will get their work done. My bet is on BvS making a move, whether it be two weeks or two months. Either way, neither film can afford that much of a box office hit if both are released on the same day. Nobody would truly win in this situation, even if DC thinks this is some sort of game (and if they do, they’re clearly in 2nd place).
Expect to hear more about the two films this July at San Diego Comic Con (SDCC)
What do you think about Captain America 3 being released on May 6th, 2016, the same date as Batman vs. Superman?
