It seems to be a bit of a trend recently that film studios act quickly to hire their film’s director for a sequel…before the initial film even hits theaters. Most recently, we saw the same happen with the Captain America and Planet of the Apes franchises, where the directors for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes have already been called upon for sequels, although neither film has even been released to the public yet.
That’s putting a lot of faith in a film, relying solely on test audiences and early buzz, to make that sort of a decision.
Now, Variety reports that Marc Webb, director of The Amazing Spider-Man and the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2, has officially signed on to direct The Amazing Spider-Man 3, the sequel set for 2016. With TASM 2 not due out until May 2nd of this year, Sony is busy soaking up the positive response from its promotional campaign, which has recently spawned several trailers, featurettes, and posters in the months leading up to the movie’s release. So much so that they’ve agreed early that Webb is best-suited for the third installment of their newest A-list franchise.
Webb has made clear several times that he has very much enjoyed making these Spider-Man films, so it is no surprise that we’ll see him helm the third (also wouldn’t be surprised if he returns for the fourth too at this point) film in their latest run at the web-slinging hero.
A good thing to take from this news is that apparently The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will indeed live up to its promotional hype, or so Sony believes. I have no doubts about the sequel, and most other people seem to think so as well.
What do you think about the news of Marc Webb returning for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 in 2016?
