Paul Bettany Reportedly Set to Play The Vision in Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron

Actor Paul Bettany is reportedly set to play The Vision in Marvel’s upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Bettany has provided the voice of JARVIS, Tony Stark’s digital Butler since 2008’s Iron Man, and it seems he will now test his hand at a physical role in Marvel Studios’ latest ensemble.
The Daily Mail first reported the news, but has now been reported by Variety as well.  And while it has not been confirmed by Marvel just yet, the possibility isn’t too far-fetched.  Another great character to unveil in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in my book.

According to The Daily Mail, Bettany was spotted with co-star Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton/Hawkeye) at Shepperton Studios in London, where they were meeting with Joss Whedon himself and taking part in a “series of costume, hair and make-up tests and worked with stuntmen and armourers”.

For those unaware of The Vision, he is a character throughout Marvel Comics, who originally appeared in The Avengers #57 in 1968.  He is an android, originally created by villain Ultron (the main villain in the Avengers sequel) who planned to use him against the Avengers team.  However, the Vision turned on his maker and became a hero.  He later joined the Avengers and has become a recurring character in Marvel Comics since.  He even sparks a romantic relationship with Scarlett Witch, who will also be in the film, played by Elizabeth Olsen.

If the rumors are true, this would actually make sense as far as the film’s continuity goes, and furthers the rumor that Tony Stark will be the creator of Ultron.  Maybe Ultron takes control of the digital version of JARVIS, turns him into The Vision, and Vision later turns a hero and helps the Avengers fight Ultron.  It also makes sense if Bettany plays him, because unless they decide to drop the JARVIS character, which doesn’t feel like a move Marvel would make as far as character continuity, then this definitely sits well with me.

But, nothing is official until Marvel says so.  So for now, we wait (very eagerly I might add)

What do you think about Paul Bettany playing a JARVIS-turned-Vision?
