Johnny Depp has officially signed on to play the notorious crime lord/fugitive White Bulger in the upcoming film Black Mass, directed by Scott Cooper (Out of the Furnace, Crazy Heart). Actor Tom Hardy is also in talks to star in the film, Deadline reports.
Depp, known for his endless list of portraying fictional fantasy characters, has tested his hand at playing real-life criminals before this. He took on the role of gangster John Dillinger in 2009’s Public Enemies, and coke-dealer George Jung in 2000’s Blow.
Tom Hardy is in talks to join the film as well, to star as FBI agent John Connolly, who was Bulger’s childhood friend. Connolly was sent to prison for tipping off Bulger that he would soon be indicted. This move helped send Bulger to the top of the FBI’s Most Wanted list.
Production for the film is set to begin in May.
