Typical for Marvel Studios, they’re always planning ahead. Even with Captain America: The Winter Soldier not due out until April 4th, it looks as though the gears may be in the early stages of turning for a third installment in the Captain America franchise.
Variety reports that sources told them Winter Soldier directors Anthony & Joe Russo will return to direct a Captain America 3. However, neither Marvel or the Russo’s reps had any comment.
This isn’t too surprising, considering Chris Evans’ extensive contract with Marvel Studios, and since test screenings for Winter Soldier have reportedly gone very well.
Although nothing official has been announced, sources say the Russos are already putting a basic outline of the sequel’s story together. If reception for Winter Soldier proves strong, Marvel could move quickly and an announcement at San Diego Comic Con this Summer would not be out of the question.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has previously mentioned that “in an ideal world” he would hope to have each year feature one sequel and one new film for their Cinematic Universe, so Cap 3 could even be possible for 2017, the last film before Avengers 3 (most likely 2018).
Are you guys already excited for the probable Captain America 3? In the meantime, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set to hit theaters on April 4th.
