Warner Bros’ upcoming spin on the Peter Pan story, entitled Pan, is set to hit theaters on July 17th, 2015. Most recently, the studio swapped the film into the slot left vacant by their other big project, Batman vs. Superman, which they moved back almost a full year. Now, maybe Pan is turning out to be a bit more than just a back-up plan for Warner Bros. in Summer 2015.
It had been rumored for about a month now, but it has now been confirmed that X-Men franchise star Hugh Jackman has been cast as evil pirate Blackbeard in the new Peter Pan movie. Earlier reported by THR, Greg Silverman, president of creative development and worldwide production at Warner Bros. made the following statement involving the casting of Jackman:
“Hugh Jackman always delivers indelible performances that resonate with audiences. We know he will create a Blackbeard who will be a powerful presence in this original Peter Pan adventure.”
More recently, Jackman has utilized his time by continuing his starring role in the ongoing X-Men film franchise, as well as taking on roles in other films, giving stellar performances in films like Les Miserables and Prisoners. He is definitely a diverse actor who often goes underrated at times. I’ve always thought he’d make a good villain, and now it looks like we’ll see him in the role of who else but Blackbeard the Pirate. Ian McShane portrayed the infamous pirate in 2011’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and hopefully this is a step up (and I think it will be).
Joe Wright (Hanna, The Soloist) is set to helm the project, which should also work very well.
Pan is set to hit theaters on July 17th, 2015.
