At fifty years old, the legendary James Bond franchise released the highly-acclaimed Skyfall in 2012. The third film to star Daniel Craig as Agent 007, it followed 2006’s Casino Royale and 2008’s Quantum of Solace, and continued the story of Craig’s portrayal of Bond.
Now, it seems that the next two movies in the franchise will follow that pattern, and build on Skyfall’s story. Set for a November 2015 release, the next film, only known as Bond 24, will continue with this current run of the series. Skyfall director Sam Mendes will return to direct.
Set to return and write Bond 24 is John Logan, who recently told IGN of his plans to making the next installment:
“My goal is to write a great movie that’s appropriate, to build on what we did on Skyfall, but make it its own unique animal.”
What a lot of people (including myself) enjoyed about Skyfall was its use of elements from the classic Bond films. Most notably, it saw the return of staple characters Moneypenny and Q, and even a classic car. While I have seen people wonder how the next films will continue Skyfall’s story, I don’t really see why it can’t work. James Bond has been portrayed on-screen for 50 years now, and apparently that is Logan’s thought process as well:
“The themes, ideas and the characters from Skyfall can obviously continue on, because it is a franchise, and it is an ongoing story. So I think there’s resonance from Skyfall in the new movie.”
Speaking of nostalgia from the older Bond films, another nugget of info is that there is a possibility we could see a villain from the classic era of the series. I read that Eon Productions recently got the rights back to classic villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld for film. The villain was previously portrayed by several actors in the films for two decades; between 1963 and 1983.
What do you Bond fans think of the nostalgic feeling that came with Skyfall, which will continue to be shown in Bond 24 and hopefully 25 as well? Is this a good direction or way to utilize the franchise’s material?
Bond 24 is set to be released in the UK on October 23rd, 2015, and in the U.S. on November 6th, 2015. It will be directed by Sam Mendes, and starring Daniel Craig.
