‘Despicable Me 3’ Gets Summer 2017 Release Date

1 despicable_me_2_2

When it comes to animated films that aren’t created by Disney & Pixar, the Despicable Me franchise is one of the most successful of the past five years.  Enjoyable by both adults and kids, Despicable Me dominated the box office with half a billion dollars worldwide in 2010.  Three years later, Despicable Me 2 comes and makes almost double that at nearly $1 billion ($935 million to be exact).

Now, it’s no surprise that Universal Pictures has announced that Despicable Me 3 will see a Summer 2017 release.  The film will debut on June 30th, 2017, continuing the Summer release pattern of the previous two.

I think the biggest factor to Despicable Me is its originality.  It’s not an adaption of an old book or video game that feels forced; it’s just quirky, funny and new.  Also, how can you not adore the Minion characters?

In addition to Despicable Me 3, a spin-off featuring the Minions, simply titled Minions, is set for release on July 10th, 2015, which should please fans of the series (I mean, a movie with characters who are automatically funny without an intricate script can’t really fail with a fan base like this, right?).  The spin-off is set to star Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, and hundreds of Minions, while no casting info has been set for DM3.

Luckily with a spin-off filler for 2015, you won’t have to wait an entire four year gap from 2013 to 2017 to see another installment.  And there’s no question that both upcoming films will bring in major box office success.

What do you think of Universal moving forward with two more movies for the Despicable Me series? Is this a good idea?
