Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana have officially been added on for all three of the upcoming sequels to James Cameron’s Avatar. Worthington and Saldana, who starred in the first film, aren’t much of a casting surprise as the first film left off with both of them still the main focus.
James Cameron will be creating Avatar 2, Avatar 3, and Avatar 4, which will all be filmed back-to-back starting later this year. They will then be released in succession, starting in December 2016. 2009’s Avatar was a box office monster, grossing a massive worldwide $2.78 billion (with a ‘b’), and paving the way for the slew of modern 3D films we see today.
Although plot details have yet to be revealed, sources have told The Hollywood Reporter that Jake Sully and Neytiri, Worthington and Saldana’s characters, will have children in the sequels. The only other cast member announced so far is Stephen Lang, reprising his role as the villain in the first film. Sigourney Weaver has also been rumored to reprise her role, though nothing is official.
Saldana is set to appear in the upcoming Summer Marvel blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy, and Worthington will appear alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in the upcoming film Sabotage.
