Reel Review – The Watch (2012)

The thing you should keep in mind if you plan on watching a movie like The Watch is to not take it seriously.  From the comedic minds of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, directed by Akiva Schaffer (Hot Rod), and fronted by an all-star cast starring Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill; The Watch doesn’t necessarily aim big, but it gets by where it needs to.

The Watch follows Evan (Stiller), a friendly local who decides to start a neighborhood watch team after a murder occurs at his workplace overnight.  The volunteer watchers include Bob (Vaughn), Franklin (Hill) and Jamarcus (Richard Ayoade), who start to get along and enjoy each others company.  One night, the team discovers a seemingly alien weapon, as well as an actual alien.  Soon enough, the four friends find themselves in the midst of an alien invasion of Earth, and must find a way to stop the destruction.

The thing I liked most about The Watch was Vince Vaughn’s performance.  While his more recent films haven’t been all that great, he is the funniest character in this movie.  While Jonah Hill and Ben Stiller had their moments, most of the jokes in the film were worthy of a chuckle at best.

With a lot of low-budget alien props and makeup, which sort of resemble that of Alien, the strength of The Watch relies solely on its comedy.

The less you think about the movie, the more enjoyable it is.  The humor is what’s to be expected from the Rogen-Goldberg writing team, loaded with crude remarks and passable jokes.  And although The Watch was released before 2013’s This is the End, there is a very similar feeling between the two (something about a group of comedic actors fighting off an alien invasion).

If you’re looking for a modern comedy that blends with cheesy sci-fi that’s just for fun, give The Watch a try.

Good review Josh. Wanted to be so damn funny, but instead, ended-up just not being able to get more than a few chuckles. Though it’s obvious that everybody tries their hardest.

Thanks for reading! I agree, it was obvious how hard they were trying, even Vince Vaughn, though I stand by my saying that this was his funniest performance in a few years now.
