Following his Golden Globe win last night for his role of pianist Liberace in the HBO film Behind the Candelabra, veteran actor Michael Douglas has been officially cast for a starring role in Marvel’s upcoming Ant-Man film.
On Monday, Marvel Studios made the announcement that Michael Douglas will play the role of scientist Hank Pym, starring alongside Paul Rudd in the movie, which is set for release in July of 2015. Ant-Man will be directed by Edgar Wright, and will be the next part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The report I’m following is from Variety.
“With Hank Pym’s rich history in the Marvel Universe, we knew we needed an actor capable of bringing the weight and stature to the role that the character deserves,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said in a statement. “We felt incredibly relieved when Michael Douglas agreed to step into the part with the charm and fortitude he brings to every character he inhabits, and couldn’t be more excited to see what he will do to bring Hank Pym to life.”
Douglas will be portraying Hank Pym, who created the original Ant-Man suit and tech. This leaves a lot of people questioning what the exact plot of the film will be, seeing as though Douglas, who will be turning 70 this year, isn’t likely to do many action scenes, if any at all.
Paul Rudd will play the character of Scott Lang, who, in the comics, steals Pym’s Ant-Man suit and tech in order to save his daughter from illness. After learning of the instance Lang used the suit for, Pym allowed Lang to keep the suit, provided he only use it for good/crime-fighting.
That wouldn’t be a bad idea for the movie’s premise, all things considered. Douglas could play an already-aged version of Pym, and Rudd’s Lang could steal his tech, and start using it for a good purpose. But as for now, all things involving the actual plot are being kept a tight secret.
I’m really liking this casting choice. Douglas isn’t the first Oscar-winning acclaimed actor to join Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, following the footsteps of actors like Anthony Hopkins, Jeff Bridges, Robert Redford and Ben Kingsley, just to name a few. This proves that the MCU is an ever-growing, extremely capable saga that will go down in history as unforgettable.
What do you guys and girls think of Michael Douglas’ casting announcement for the upcoming Ant-Man?
