Starting in 2015, Marvel Comics will begin publishing new Star Wars titles, after 23 years of being published by Dark Horse Comics.
Back in 1977, Marvel released the first series of comics based on the blockbuster movie from Lucasfilm, and will now start-up again in 2015. Here’s what Lucasfilm and Marvel had to say about the announcement:
“The perennial brand of Star Wars is one of the most iconic in entertainment history and we are honored to have the opportunity to bring our creative talent pool to continue, and expand Star Wars into galaxies far, far away,” said Dan Buckley, Marvel president and publisher, in a statement.
“The cosmic adventures of Luke, Han, Leia andChewbacca will make the lightspeed jump back to Marvel, to begin a new age of adventures within theStar Wars universe,” said Carol Roeder, director of Lucasfilm franchise publishing.
Both Marvel and Lucasfilm are now owned by the Walt Disney Company, bought in 2009 and 2012 respectively. It’s not overly surprising that this would happen sooner or later, simply because Marvel and Lucasfilm are basically half-siblings now. Also, 2015 is a perfect year for Marvel to start releasing these new comics, with Star Wars: Episode VII hitting theaters the same year.
I think this is a great little piece of news. Whether you’re a fan of comics, or a casual reader like I consider myself to be, this is still some pretty cool news. Marvel Comics is a great publishing company, and will do the brand some serious justice. Not that Dark Horse didn’t; I started reading some of their title ‘The Star Wars’ released last fall, which is a comic adaptation of George Lucas’ original Star Wars screenplay, before the movie was ever put in motion.
What do you guys think, is Marvel Comics the rightful home for Star Wars titles?
