Your Friendly Neighborhood Movie Blog
It’s no doubt that the most talked-about and anticipated movie lately is the upcoming Man of Steel sequel (aka Batman vs. Superman, aka Justice League, whichever of the many rumors you may have heard).
Several DC characters have been heavily rumored to appear in the upcoming film over the past couple months, with the only official announcement being that actress Gal Gadot will play Wonder Woman. However, Superman villain Lex Luthor has been the character who’s received the most attention lately, having actors like Bryan Cranston, Joaquin Phoenix and Denzel Washington all rumored take on the role.
But now it seems that Denzel Washington (Training Day, American Gangster) may in fact be up for the role of a hero rather than a villain; Green Lantern, Nuke the Fridge reports. After DC’s Green Lantern standalone attempt in 2011, I’ll admit that it was good for one thing: giving a fresh wave of energy to the character. Other than that, a lot of people had no clue what would happen with him come time for a Justice League movie. Would Ryan Reynolds return? Would they completely forget it and reboot the character?
It doesn’t necessarily have to be either.
For those of you who don’t know, Green Lantern is one of those heroes who has had several identities over the years. While Reynolds portrayed Hal Jordan it’s possible that, if cast, Denzel Washington could play the John Stewart version of Lantern. In the sense of continuity, this makes a ton of sense. John Stewart was a founding member of the Justice League, and has been a much more recognizable character than Hal Jordan in recent years; appearing in animated TV shows and video games over the past decade.
I think that Washington is one of the best modern actors. He’s phenomenal and can take on various roles and do justice to all of them. To see him as a superhero would not be my first choice, but there’s no reason at all as to why he shouldn’t give it a go.
Slated for July 2015, it’s only natural that, moving into early 2014, we’ll probably be getting a lot of casting announcements as they move in to start filming.
What do you guys think of the possibility of Washington as Green Lantern?
The upcoming Man of Steel sequel hits theaters July 17th, 2015, directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams and Gal Gadot.
